The Experience Trip Reports |

The first charter for 2009 was on Friday the 2nd of January, and what a trip it was with the biggest Red Emperor for the boat caught.
|
Mick, his 14yr old son Corey and Ray were all on board for the first trip of 2009. We left Lucinda at 6.30am and had bait in the water by 7.15. The first few areas were a little slow with good life on the sounder but the fish were not interested in chewing. The tide was on the make and I know when this is the case they generally will chew around the last hour before the top, around the top, and then go off the chew. So with this in mind I was in a spot only 12 miles from the end of the Jetty; as I approached it the Furuno Sounder came alive with big Soundings of quality fish just up off the bottom… and plenty of them. I knew they were Nannyagi so I positioned the boat and let the 3 drop their lines. What a sight to be seen, 5 seconds later all 3 were hooked up with a Scotty Hillier “TH” (triple hookup)!! All 3 fish were landed; 3 Large Mouth Nannygai from 4kg to 7kg. From there the fish were on the chew and every drift produced something.

With plenty of fish lost and just as many landed, we took 9 Large Mouth from there and with 30 minutes left in the tide to generate a good bite I wanted to try another rock only 2 miles away. On the way I said to the boys this is where we could get an Emperor; we arrived to a moderate showing on the sounder, positioned and set the big flesh baits to the bottom.
Again the bites were thick and fast, with Mick locking onto something huge; its first run was mind blowing I called it for a big Cod. My brother and deckie Brad called it for a big Red and after a torrid battle there on the floor of the boat was the biggest Emperor I have seen for a while, and a record for the Kevlacat… a 15.5kg monster Red! There were high 5’s going everywhere. We continued at this spot for another quality Emperor and a few Large Mouth Nannygai over the 10kg mark.
It was another great day with 3 very happy fishers!
