February 2009

Exciting times up our way recently with all the floods. Despite the damage, we count ourselves very fortunate considering the devastation in Victoria.

During the floods I was able to launch my tinnie from the end of my street rather than the 20 minute drive to Lucinda, and I had the pleasure of ferrying Channel Seven’s News & Sunrise crews around the streets (or rivers as they were!) of Ingham. One of my neighbours caught 2 barra in his front yard; that’s how good the fishing is up here!

I Had John and Paul Formosa travel up from Mackay in early February to fish with me for 2 days; the flood waters nearly stopped what was to be a great few days fishing.

We travelled out at 6am on the first day and stopped off at a little spot a mere 6nm from the end of the Lucinda Jetty and were greeted by small fish, although John did get smoked by something large!!

I then moved North to check a few rocks out for Nannygai and Emperor; the first few were a little quiet but we continued to search when I marked up a great show on the Furuno. I quickly told John to drop a bait down; fishing in only 36m of water John was on the bottom within seconds and as I turned my head to check on him his rod was buckled and he was locked onto a beauty. His son Paul quickly wound his in and just missed a good fish. Before too long John had a 6 kg Nannygai laying on the floor of the boat. I knew this was to be a hot spot by the show on the sounder and where the fish were positioned, so next drift I put the boys just up from the mark and as we drifted through them their baits landed in the school and within a count of 5 seconds both were locked onto great fish… What a sight, father and son doing battle together. Again, 2 impressive Large Mouth Nannygai lay on the floor of the boat around the 7kg mark.

We continued this drift a few more times where the boys enjoyed more Large Mouth Nannygai, the best up near the 9kg mark, a few monster Gold Spot Cod that were released unharmed and a double hookup of 10kg Golden Trevally. What a sight this was as these fish do know how to pull.

After a good session on the Red fish we headed over to a few Bommies and cast a popper around. After locating a bit of bait on the surface Paul managed a 7kg Mackerel on popper and a 10kg Giant Trevally whilst John still suffering from sore arms from the big Nannygai boated a nice GT around the 5kg mark.

The next day resembled the first although the fish were a little more hard to entice a bite from we ended up with some lovely Rosy Jobfish, Coral Trout, Largemouth Nannygai, Sweetlip and Tuskfish to round off a good mixed bag of fish; not to mention the half a dozen or so 30 pound Chinaman and Bludger Trevally that also gave the men a bit of fun………
