10 - 14 April 2009

We took Lauren, Allan, Peter and Ross out over the Easter break for a 3 day charter. The weather was a little unkind but the fishing was red-hot.

Day one we headed out around 25nm to a patch of rubble that I had left alone for a few months. After a couple of drifts over the top of it we landed half a dozen largemouth nannygai ranging between 4kg and 9kg. The boys were amazed at the size of the fish and the quality, but this was only a taste of what was to come… With the wind up a bit we tucked in behind the reef in around 50m of water… the next few hours were nothing short of MAYHEM with the first 15 minutes producing 2 lovely red emperor, a few large mouth nannygai, sweetlip and trevally. With the boys looking for an excuse to sit back and relax the action continued right through until the turn of the tide. We managed 7 legal red emperor plus a swag of other quality fish, so with enough for a good feed we departed for home.

Day 2 we headed over to the islands to troll for a few mackerel. We had several screams of the reel for no hook-ups. We then caught some live bait and fished a few bommies; this is where Allan started to shine with a lovely large mouth nannygai and then a Gold spot cod around the 15kg mark.. another great day.

Day 3 the boys and I headed for the river to chase a few Barra. We collected live mullet for a few hours then sat on a few snags and soaked the live mullet. Rossco landed a nice barra measuring in at 84cm, then it was Ross again when his reel screamed off with an estimated 90cm barra on it but the line was cut on the snag and the fish won the battle.

I dropped the boys off at the airport with a box of fresh reef fillets each to take home and huge smiles on their face.
