16 - 19 April 2009

I collected Don, Max, Ron and Graham from the airport and delivered them to their accomadation. The whole trip from the airport was about fishing, I could tell these boys were as pumped up more than any I had taken out fishing.

Day 1 with the weather good I headed out 30nm to fish another few rocks that had been kind to me in the past. We stopped at the first one for a few nice nannygai but all in all it was a bit quiet. As we arrived at the next spot a further 5 nm out the Furuno sounder come to life. I knew they were good large mouth nannygai; we put a few baits over the side and the first drop produced a DH double hook of large mouth nannygai around 5kg each. The next few drifts included all 4 hooked up along with plenty of triple hook-ups. After a few hours we had caught enough with a few of the fish touching 9kg. We looked around a few other marks for some more fish and headed for home after lunch.

Day 2 we headed out to chase a few trout and sweetlip. On the way I wanted to get the boys a big red fish each, so I stopped on a nice rock where a couple of large mouth 8kg and 9 kg were caught. We then fished another where I put a live bait on Max’s line… after a few seconds on the bottom it was screaming and not long after so was Max with an 11kg emperor laying on the deck. Another quality emperor was caught also; we then anchored in the shallows for a nice catch of coral trout, red throat sweetlip cod and others.

Day 3 was to do a bit of trolling over at the islands for mackerel with several strikes for no luck. Our last run past, the big rod took off again. Graham was on the rod and played out a torrid battle with a 30kg Giant trevally, the fish was brought aboard for a few quick snaps and then released to fight another day. The boys wanted to catch a few red fish to finish on and after checking out several spots I found one that was loaded with good fish. We kept a few more but released most with some of the fish going back all around the 5kg mark. A great few days and all the boys had a ball.
