| Fishing the last few months |
Fishing has been fantastic over the last few months with plenty of top quality fish being caught; in particular the red emperor. We have boated 27 legal emperor over the last few months mixed in with them has been plenty of large mouth nannygai. The shallows have been firing as well for good coral trout and red throat sweetlip and this should continue for the next few months.
A couple of trips to mention was when Corey Parker, Joel Clinton and Nick Kenny from the Brisbane Broncos joined me recently as they had a week off from training; well they were supposed to. These boys had the trip of a life time with glorious conditions. We travelled 30nm out wide, our first stop resulted in Corey Parker landing 3 legal red emperor in one drift. Joel landed a few big large mouth nannygai around the 9kg mark with Nick joining in with some good nannygai, cod and sweetlip.
We put the bottom gear away for a small time and threw out the rigged gar, first pass over the huge pinnacle resulted in a double hook up of large Spanish mackerel, next pass Nick landed a 50 pound GT and then Joel got smoked on a monster fish, I think a dog tooth tuna. We then headed out to a deep water pinnacle and the big trout were on the chew and the boys got stuck into some beauties around the 3kg mark. With plenty of fish for a feed we headed for home with some very happy footballers.

A few months ago we headed out from Cardwell with Russell Ingel from the Super Cheap racing team and James Courtney from Jim Beam racing. We threw the lures out first up and James was onto a quality Spanish mackerel and fished very well to land a 8kg mackerel. We then moved to a bit of rubble where both boys enjoyed landing nannygai and big trevally. Then Russell’s line took off and after a torrid battle and plenty of line being peeled off we had laying on the deck a monster 25kg Cobia and one very happy bloke. We continued to fish when both men experienced GT’s around 30 to 40kg eating their smaller fish. We didn’t get to land any but the battles that were had were just awesome with both Russell and James loving every minute of it.
All in all the fishing has been really good. Some days the big red fish take a little longer to find but we have always been able to put our clients onto some quality fish. With the warm water around the nannygai and emperor are sitting in the deeper water and in good schools so they are great fun to catch when they are schooled up like this; we drop a nice big whole squid down on a dropper rig and then hang on.
